Who is the interviewer? George Hartman

Sherman Delman was born the 4th, of September in 1863. He had a vast life of work, working 40 years as a blacksmith in Syracuse and Lincoln, Germany. When he moved to America he started to paint from 1920-1938. He mainly painted abstract paintings of the growth of Nebraska. Sherman Delman worked hard all of his life, lived an honest one and expected others to do so, and finally he was a good man with a good record.

My impressions of this interview tell me that this man was a hard worker trying to support his family the best way he possibly can. As it said in the interview, "he worked hard all of his life...", that tells me that he is a true patriot. He was a blacksmith for 40 years. It also told me that he was patially deaf and still busted his butt to make a living. That shows a lot of character. I'm surprised nobody wrote a book on him, maybe i will. But the most spectacular aspect of Sherman is that he left school in fourth grade to find a trade and help his family survive during this tradgic depression.

In this picture it shows a black family who went through some terrible troubles during the great depression. As you can see in the background, they most likely don't get any rain, which means they don't get much crops. The clothes they have on are very rugged and torn apart. It could probablly lead to serious illness or even death. But, the key fact that during the time of all of the prejudice, the blacks and whites still had to to survive and work their butt off every day to do so. It's like we were all connected no matter what people thought. We were all trying to survive during this harsh era.

Who is being interviewed? George Dodge
What is his/her title or position? Mason and Carpenter
What is his/her race? Gender? Age? White, Male, 70
Where is the interview taking place? Peru, Massachusetts.
What is the date of the interview? 1/34/39
Who is the interviewer? Rosalie Smith
George Dodge was born in Worthingford, Massachueets. He calls himself a Yankee because his father was one of the first people to settle in old Deerfield and his mother's people went there in 1700 and many of them settled in Chesterfield. When his wife Martha died he planned on never having another women take her place. He had been though harder times. He states that "In 1876 there were the hardest times I ever saw." which was during the Great Depression. If people could get work they would only get about 50 cents a day. His mother provided the income from her home dairy where she sold butter for 12 cents a pound, sugar for six or seven cents a pound, and turkey for 12 and 14 cents a pound. It lasted like that for about 8 years.
Based on what I read about George Dodge, his story made me very thankful for what I have. I could not imagine working extreemly hard and getting very little in return. I admire him because he knows what is is to be in the worst position. His wife died and he choose not to remarry because he did not want anyone to replace her. This left him with more work but he was able to handle it because he went though the great depression. -Becky P

This picture is a good example of the great depression because it shows a young negro girl working. She should be getting an education or outside having fun. The work place does not seem very clean. It looks small and dirty. -Becky P

This picture is also a great example of the great depression. It shows workers again in dangerous places. The cranes do not seem safe. There was no safety equipment. -Becky P

This picture shows the great depression in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is very blurry which makes it seem like a dark time, and the boy does not look happy. The child looks about 5 years old and he is all alone. -Becky P
